What Forty Years in Ministry Taught Me About the Men No One Believes In

September 30, 2026•2 min read

Over four decades of business and ministry, I have sat with a lot of men. Men in boardrooms and men behind bars. Men who looked like they had everything together and men who had lost everything.

And here is what I have learned: the category a man falls into often has far less to do with his character than with whether someone believed in him at a critical moment.

Over four decades of business and ministry, one truth has never changed: the men most people write off are often closest to breakthrough.

Why Prison Ministry Changed How I See All Men

For the past several years, I have taught leadership and personal development inside prison walls. And every time I walk into that room, I am reminded of something easy to forget in comfortable spaces: men who are written off still have a calling.

The capacity for transformation does not disappear because of a sentence. In many cases, the men who have hit the hardest bottom are closest to the kind of clarity that those who have never been shaken never find.

"Redemption is not just a theological concept. It is a daily reality for the man willing to surrender what was and build what can be."

The Broader Crisis Among Men

The men inside those facilities are not as different from men outside them as we prefer to believe. The struggles are the same -- identity confusion, the weight of unprocessed shame, the absence of mentorship, the quiet belief that it is too late to change course.

The solution is often the same too: someone who shows up with truth, with structure, and with the belief that this man's story is not finished.

What Men Actually Need to Change

After forty-plus years, I have stopped believing that men primarily need more information. What men need is a framework they can act on, a community that holds them accountable, and a belief system that does not crumble under real pressure.

Purpose is not discovered by thinking harder. It is activated by deciding to move -- imperfectly, faithfully, consistently -- in the direction of who you were created to be.

When a man encounters genuine belief -- from another person, from his faith, from himself -- everything becomes possible.

An Invitation

Whether you have spent time behind bars or spent your life building something that now feels hollow -- you are not too far gone. You are not too old. Your worst chapter is not your final one.
